A senior traffic cop has appealed to the UAE’s young drivers to follow road rules after the Ministry of Interior revealed there were 4.3 million speeding violations on the nation’s roads in 2013.

Authorities said most of the speeding offences were committed on roads by motorists aged 18 to 35.

“We appeal to youths to try to abide by traffic rules and avert reckless driving to preserve their lives and the lives of other road users,” said Brigadier Gaith Al Zaabi, director general of the traffic coordination department at the Ministry of Interior.

“Driving at very high speed is dangerous, not only to a speeding driver but also to other road users. People driving at excessive speed fail to control their vehicles and they cause accidents on many occasions,” he said.

The officer said violating traffic laws is the major cause of road accidents and has resulted in many deaths and injuries. He noted that UAE traffic authorities are pushing ahead with a strategy to cut accidents on roads and reduce deaths to 5.5 per every 100,000 people by 2030.

Traffic authorities have also urged drivers to abide by laws to avoid road accidents, stressing that road accidents have negative effects on the country’s economic, social and environmental aspects.
