Why a Liverpool title win would be the Premier League's greatest ever

Should Liverpool go onto clinch the title this season, club legend John Barnes believes it would rank as the Premier League's greatest ever triumph.

The Reds have their destiny in their own hands following last's weekend thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester City at Anfield which was their 10th successive league win.

Victories in their remaining four games, starting with this weekend's trip to relegation-threatened Norwich, would see the club clinch a first league title since 1990. It would also seem match Arsenal's record of most league wins in a row (14).

Captain Steven Gerrard has refused to entertain the idea of finally ending 24 years of hurt, insisting there is still plenty of hard work ahead, not least with Chelsea still to visit Anfield on April 27.

It's a view shared by Barnes, who won two league titles during 10 years with the club. However, speaking to Yahoo Maktoob Sports in Dubai this week, the 50-year-old is adamant that glory for the Reds would surpass Blackburn's success in 1995 or Arsenal's invincible year in 2004.

"It would have to be the greatest in Premier League history. If you look at the team they've got, could you have envisaged they would have been this good over a 38 game season? The answer would be no. No chance," said Barnes.

The former England star also gave his verdict on boss Brendan Rodgers and insists Gerrard is in the top two of the club's greatest ever players whether he wins the league title or not.
