Watson takes blame for Royals defeat

A disappointed Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Watson took the blame for his side’s narrow loss in a low-scoring match against Chennai Super Kings last night.

Rajasthan did extremely well to restrict the two-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings to just 140, but were bowled out for 133 with one ball to spare.

Several Rajasthan batsmen were dismissed trying to go for ambitious shots and Watson was one of them, holing out in the deep trying to go a second successive six off Ravindra Jadeja in the seventh over.

Watson said: “There is no doubt it was a great bowling performance to be able to restrict Chennai to 140. We were very specific in what we set out to do, especially with the bowling, so I think we executed things really well.

“I am really proud of the guys how we were able to turn things around from the previous game against the Kings XI to be able to execute like we did.

“And then the batting performance is just extremely disappointing. I’ll certainly take a huge amount of the blame for that performance. For me, the most experienced player and as the leader as well, it’s certainly not good enough.

“What we needed was one partnership through that middle period or at the start to be able to just get us home, and unfortunately that didn’t happen. I am certainly one of the main culprits there.

“It’s part of my job batting at No4, and as a leader, to get us through to that total, and I certainly wasn’t good enough.”

Chennai’s match-winner Jadeja, named Man of the Match for his heroics with both ball and the bat, said his side always believed 140 was a good score to defend given the condition of the pitch.

“We knew the wicket was pretty slow and the odd ball was keeping low. We knew if we scored 140-150 we had a good chance,” said Jadeja, who added that he enjoyed bowling in conditions almost similar to the ones he gets back home in India.

“This was very similar to Mumbai, Calcutta, Delhi. Very similar. Actually, I wanted to just bowl in the right areas and wasn’t trying any variations. I wasn’t looking for wickets, just trying to bowl dot balls. I knew the rest wicket will do.

“We are happy with the win. This game was very important because we needed to keep our winning
momentum.”
