People Play Football on New Jersey Turnpike During Traffic Jam

The New Jersey Turnpike was shut down in both directions on Tuesday, August 4, after a dump truck hit an overpass in Linden and burst into flames. The driver’s condition was not known, according to reports. Northbound truck lanes were reopened by late afternoon, but all others were expected to remain closed until Tuesday evening, the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management said on Twitter.

Many motorists and passengers got out of their cars during the major traffic-jam that ensued. Photos and videos shared of the scene on social media show people tanning and throwing a football while they waited for the highway to reopen. Credit: Instagram/Austin Sipes
