HRW Blasts Decision to Award Beijing the 2022 Winter Olympics

Human Rights Watch strongly condemned the decision of the International Olympics Committee on July 31 to award the 2022 winter games to Beijing. Speaking in this video, Director of Global Initiatives for Human Rights Watch Minky Worden says the decision has “come at a time of the worst crackdown on human rights in China in more than two decades.”

She said HRW research has shown that awarding sporting events to countries with poor human rights records serves to exacerbate problems, citing incidents of forced evictions, migrant labour abuses, and activist arrests during the build-up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic games. She called on the IOC “to insist that China play by the rules.” Credit: YouTube/Human Rights Watch
