IS Hostage John Cantlie Speaks From Kobane

Al-’Itisam, an official Islamic State media wing, released a video on October 27 showing British hostage John Cantlie in a broadcast from Kobane. The Islamic State has released five propaganda videos of Cantlie since his kidnap in Syria in November 2012.

In the video titled “Inside Ayn Al Islam,” the name given by IS to Kobane — also known as Ayn Al-Arab — John Cantlie suggests that claims made by Western media suggesting an IS retreat in Kobane are unfounded, and that instead, IS militants have nearly complete control of the city.

A Panoramio photo, which captures the silver “Turkish wheat silos” pictured at 20 seconds into the footage are geolocated at the Syria-Turkey border on Google Maps. The same silos are visible to the left, behind Cantlie, as he speaks from a rooftop in the northern part of Kobane at 3:49 minutes.

We cannot confirm the exact date that the footage was filmed. Credit: Al-’Itisam
