German football fans are jubilant after World Cup win

Celebratory fireworks marked the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after Germany’s 1-0 win over Argentina. It is the country’s fourth World Cup trophy and brings to an end Europe’s poor record in the tournament on South American soil. “We are so happy to have won this thing here in Rio, in the Maracana. It was so close but it was great. It was a great game..now we have a fourth cup….we made it … four times it’s been Germany Germany Germany,” rejoiced one fan in Rio. Another was equally thrilled: “It’s brilliant to be World Champions here in the stadium, we only experience this once every 24 years. Today this is the moment, sensational, it’s crazy. The Brazilians are celebrating with us and that’s the best thing.” The winning goal in the closing minutes of extra time were greeted with roars of triumph as 33.000 German fans watched the match on giant screens in Munich. Our reporter in the German city, Katharina Weser said: “The German national team has turned football world upside down. For the first time a European team has won the World Cup in the Americas . And of course the fans at the public viewing event here in Munich are celebrating this victory extensively.” But back in Buenos Aires, stunned Argentine supporters shed tears at the result. After the match there were even skirmishes between riot police and stone throwing youths venting their frustration. Local television reported 30 arrests and 15 police officers wounded.
