A cigarette amnesty is to be declared by a fitness firm in the UAE as it tries to convince people to quit smoking.

Fitness First Middle East is launching a ‘Commit to Quit’ campaign and will be urging smokers to dump their fag packets into a bin at each of its centres in the UAE.

The move is being carried out to coincide with World No Tobacco Day on May 31. The group marketing manager Mark Botha said: “We at Fitness First are playing our part by educating people on the effects of smoking on exercise.

“Good health is vital and we need to treat our bodies well and with respect.” As well as the amnesty, Fitness First, which has more than 50 clubs across 42 locations in the Middle East, will also be holding talks and carryng out free carbon monoxide test for members.

The goal of World No Tobacco Day, which is organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is to protect present and future generations against the health consequences of tobacco.

This year, it also has the specific goal of getting governments to increase taxes on tobacco to levels that reduce tobacco consumption. WHO said tobacco kills nearly six million people each year. More than five million are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.

It added that unless urgent action is taken, the annual death toll could rise to more than eight million by 2030.
