Tourist arrested for marijuana possession claims it was given to him by his doctor

A tourist who was caught at Dubai Airport with 67g of marijuana in his bag claimed the drug was prescribed by a doctor to treat his ADHD, Dubai Court of First Instance heard.

Prosecutors said the 34-year-old US defendant was arrested at Dubai International Airport in December, where he was found with drugs in his bag after travelling from US.

“I’m innocent. I had the marijuana as medicine. I suffer from ADHD and have a prescription from doctors to use it for relaxation,” the man told the court. “I even went to the UAE embassy in Washington to have the prescription stamped to show I have no legal responsibility for it in Dubai,” the American man told the judge. He also claimed he was only carrying 2.4g of marijuana.

According to official records, a Dubai Customs inspector suspected the defendant and asked to search his bags, where he found the drugs hidden inside.
Police took a urine sample from the man, which showed he had drugs in his system.

The defendant claimed he had taken marijuana in America before leaving to travel to Dubai. The defendant showed a prescription from a doctor in the US saying he uses marijuana for medical purposes. The document was approved by the US foreign affairs ministry, the UAE embassy in Washington and the UAE foreign affairs ministry in Dubai.

The judge refused to set the defendant free on bail. A verdict will be issued on April 27.
