Novak Djokovic wins his third successive Mubadala World Tennis Championship title after beating David Ferrer in Sunday's final 7-5, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, ensures he leaves the UAE capital with one win under his belt as he sees off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the third/fourth place match.

Djokovic remained on course for a hat-trick of Abu Dhabi titles after easing past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6, 6-3 in Saturday's semi-final.

Afterwards, he confirmed his plans ahead of the Australian Open next month which may come as a surprise to many:

World No1 Rafael Nadal suffered a shock defeat to compatriot David Ferrer, 6-4, 6-4, and then revealed why the Davis Cup may well take a backseat in 2014.

DAY 1 SUMMARY

In the opening match of the day, world No3 David Ferrer had too much class for Stanislas Wawrinka to claim a deserved 7-5, 6-1 and book a semi-final clash with Rafael Nadal.

Meanwhile, fans favourite Andy Murray crashed to a first round defeat for the second year running as he crashed to a 7-5, 6-3 reverse to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

NADAL-DJOKOVIC RIVALRY

The top two in the world, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, will renew hostilities in 2014, not just for Grand Slam titles but also for the No1 ranking.
