Super Kings reign supreme with dominant display against dire Delhi

Suresh Raina hit his 19th Indian Premier League half-century as Chennai Super Kings took full advantage of an early injury to Delhi Daredevils pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile to seal a crushing 93-run victory in Abu Dhabi.

Chennai got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in the twilight of the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium but Raina aided their recovery as he hit a delightful 56 that included five fours and a six.

The India star went past the 50 mark for the 20th time in his IPL career — he has one hundred to his name — at the end of the 13th over, but within 10 balls he was gone.

In his absence captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (32) and Faf du Plessis (24) stepped on the accelerator as Chennai accumulated 112 runs from the second half of their innings.

Delhi had some early success, restricting the Super Kings to just 65-1 at the halfway stage but having lost Coulter-Nile to what appeared to be a hamstring injury as he made a stop in the field in the first over, their attack ran out of gas.

With captain Kevin Pietersen still out injured, their chase never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals while failing to keep pace with the rate.

James Neesham top scored with 22 from 15 balls, but it was too little too late to prevent Chennai sealing their first win of this year’s competition.

Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith had been in devastating form against Kings XI Punjab here on Friday, putting on 123 for the first wicket. However, they found things much tougher under lights.

McCullum was the first to go, caught by substitute fielder Wayne Parnell off the bowling of Jaydev Unadkat one ball after he was inexplicably dropped by Jean-Paul Duminy.

Smith and Raina then put on 54 for the second wicket, but the West Indies batsman had not looked comfortable — surviving a strong lbw appeal in only the second over — and he was dismissed with the last ball of the 11th as he looked to slog Shahbaz Nadeem.

That left Chennai on 77 for two with just nine overs remaining. But thanks to contributions from Raina, Dhoni and Du Plessis they would put on another 100 runs in those 54 balls.

Raina was the architect with 56 from 41 balls, but Dhoni’s contribution was invaluable hitting 32 runs from only 15 deliveries.

Du Plessis (24) had departed by the time Dhoni skied a slower delivery from Unadkat to Mayank Agarwal with six balls left.

The previous 16 deliveries had disappeared for 37 and thanks to a late cameo from Mithun Manhas (13no) Chennai were able to add a further 21 runs to set a victory target of 178.

In all 58 runs had come from the final four overs as stand-in Delhi captain Dinesh Karthik struggled to juggle his bowling attack following the loss of Coulter-Nile.

Delhi never looked likely to get anywhere near their target as Ishwar Pandy struck with the first ball of the third over to send Agarwal back to the pavilion for two.

Wickets then fell in each of the next two overs as Murali Vijay (11) and Manoj Tiwary (0) both departed.

Karthik and Duminy threatened some resistance but Smith took the latter with his first ball to leave Delhi struggling on 42 for 4.

Coulter-Nile’s injury meant he was unable to bat, and needing only five more wickets for their first win of the year, Chennai sensed blood.

The game was wrapped up in 15.4 overs as Delhi, badly missing Pietersen, were only able to add another 42.
