Sri Lanka foreign minister visiting India

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) Sri Lanka Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris is arriving here on Aug 18 to invite India for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo in November.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said Peiris, during his visit, would also discuss issues of bilateral interest.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is being held in Colombo from Nov 15 to 17.

Peiris will be in India for a day-long visit with an invitation letter for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to attend the CHOGM summit.

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has quoted Peiris as saying that the CHOGM meet would be an ideal forum for the government to convince the international community of the measures taken to safeguard human rights in Sri Lanka.

Some political parties have asked India not to participate in the CHOGM summit citing alleged human rights violations by Sri Lanka.
