Second GCC Beach Games continue as UAE, Qatar and Oman vie for top spot

The second GCC Beach Games have heated up as Qatar tops the overall table with eight medals, including three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze while Oman are close behind with a total of seven medals. The UAE sits in third place with four medals.

Team Qatar continued their unparalleled performance in handball and defeated Bahrain in the final. The Qatari handball team took home the gold medal in front of their energetic fans, while Oman claimed the silver medal and Bahrain settled for bronze.

Qatar’s volleyball team also dominated the competition, blazing through both sets in the final against Oman’s second-team, to claim a 2-0 victory alongside a gold medal. Oman’s first-team won the bronze medals.

Commenting on the success of Team Qatar, Director of PR and Marketing at the Qatar Olympic Committee, Mohamed al-Fadala said:“We are very pleased with the performance of all of our athletes, especially the handball and volleyball teams. To see such an outstanding performance in an intensely competitive tournament is testament to all the athletes.

“It is our sincere hope that all the children here today who have witnessed the live sporting action will leave with a newfound passion for sports.”

The UAE continued their winning streak in football after defeating Kuwait and Qatar to top the standings with 6 points, with Oman following close with just a one goal difference between them and the leaders. Kuwait sits comfortably in third place after demolishing Bahrain 6-1 on Monday.

Qatar took home more medals in Katara Cultural Village, where Open Water Swimming and Rowing are being held. Waleed al-Sharshani won the gold medal for Team Qatar in the Laser Standard Class, ahead of Bahrain who took silver and Oman who claimed Bronze.

Bahrain’s Jassim Showaiter managed to snag the gold in the Laser Radial class, ahead of Qatar’s Faris al-Bakri and UAE’s Saeed al-Zaidi.

Meanwhile Oman’s Khais al-Wahaibi stole the show in the Laser 4.7 Class event and won the gold medal while UAE’s Hamza al-Ali won silver and Team Qatar’s Abdulrahman Ajinah claimed the bronze medal.

The excitement on the beaches of Katara continued with Oman’s Zakaria al-Wahabi winning the gold medal in the Optimist Class, beating both UAE’s Abdullah al-Bishr and Oman’s Marwan al-Jabri who won silver and bronze.

With three more days left until the Closing Ceremony on Thursday 9th April at al-Gharafa Club, the 3x3 Basketball competitions will begin on Wednesday and conclude the following day, with Qatar considered as the favorites to walk away the overall champions.
