The UAE government has deployed a search-and-rescue team to Fujairah to help residents whose properties and cars have been damaged by bad weather.

HH Lt Gen Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, sent the Emirates Search and Rescue Team (UAESRT) to Fujairah to support the emirate’s civil defence, read a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior.

Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah were battered by heavy rain on Friday and Saturday, according to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), damaging property and cars.

The rescue team consists of 110 people, 15 vehicles and 15 tonnes of specialist search-and-rescue equipment. A mobile command centre has been set up in Fujairah to oversee the operation.

“The team will stay in Fujairah until the weather is better,” said UAESRT head Lt Col Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari.

Brigadier Ali Al Tuniji, head of civil defence in Fujairah, said damage to properties has been limited, but the team has been deployed as a precaution. “Some families were stranded in their houses,” he said. “There is still bad weather forecast and we want to be prepared in case of emergency.”

The weather today is expected to be hazy and partly cloudy in the north, with winds causing dust and reducing visibility in open areas, NCMS said.
