Police only used teargas in Cairo Uni protests: Egypt's interior ministry

The Ministry of Interior stressed on Monday that no police personnel were present inside Cairo University where one student was killed during clashes on Monday and two journalists injured by gunshots.

"Police officers were outside the Cairo University campus using only tear gas to disperse protests outside the main gates of the university," read the statement posted on the ministry's official Facebook page.

The statement added that investigations by the prosecution revealed some protesters on the university campus were in possession of arms.

On Monday, a student died and two reporters suffered gunshots during clashes at Cairo University that erupted between security forces and students loyal to ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

Minister of Health Adel Adawi visited the two wounded journalists later the same day at Qasr Al-Eini Hospital where they had been transferred soon after sustaining their wounds.

Doctors affirmed that Khaled Hussein, reporter for the local Youm7newspaper, is in stable condition, while Amr Abdel-Fattah, correspondent for private TV channel Sada Al-Balad, remains under medical supervision.
