A passenger slit his own throat and wrists “with a sharp blade” onboard an Emirates flight from Dubai to India.

Indian police said that the man, in his 30s, attempted suicide in the toilet shortly before flight EK 526 landed in Hyderabad.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police inspector A Krishnaiah told The New Indian Express: “One of the air-hostesses saw the passenger lying in the washroom of the plane in a pool of blood and alerted the flight staff.

“After the plane landed, the flight staff alerted the airport staff who shifted him to a corporate hospital for treatment.”

The incident happened on Friday, April 4. When asked by 7DAYS, Emirates did not comment as to how the man got the blade on board. The airline released the following statement: “Emirates can confirm that on 4 April 2014 an incident occurred during flight EK526 from Dubai to Hyderabad whereby a passenger was found bleeding heavily in the restroom just before descent by cabin crew.

“Crew administered all the necessary treatment onboard. Upon arrival into Hyderabad the passenger was met by medical crews and taken to a nearby hospital. As a result of this incident the aircraft was unable to be utilised for the carriage of passengers and was flown back to Dubai for maintenance.

“As the matter is now under investigation, Emirates cannot comment further on the incident.”
