Mumbai crash to second straight defeat as RCB impress again

Mumbai Indians' wretched defence of their Indian Premier League title continued as Royal Challengers Bangalore punished a dismal batting display to cruise to a routine victory.

A carnival crowd packed into the sold-out Dubai International Cricket Stadium for its first-ever IPL match saw the holders register a pathetic 115-9, in an innings in which only Ambati Rayudu scored more than 20.

However, it was not all plain sailing in reply for RCB who lost key men Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh for ducks.

In the absence of injured powerhouse Chris Gayle, a well-paced 99-run partnership from AB de Villiers and Parthiv Patel then saw them home within 18 overs at the loss of just three wickets.

This was not an exhibition of Twenty20's trademark free hitting, but RCB did not care as Patel's single earned their triumph in a fitting manner.

Mumbai had crashed to a 41-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in their season opener in Abu Dhabi, while RCB swatted aside Delhi Daredevils by eight wickets.

Virat Kohli's star-studded side can now look forward to a promising season. For Mumbai, serious questions must now be answered after a second-successive batting disaster.
