Man hands himself in after wife found dead

The crime scene of the alleged murder of a woman in Ras Al Khaimah

A man suspected of stabbing his wife to death has surrendered to police in Abu Dhabi. The 47-year-old Iraqi man fled the family home in Ras Al Khaimah on Sunday evening but then turned himself in to officers in the capital.

RAK Police said yesterday that the 39-year-old Iraqi woman was found dead by her son at their home in Al Suhailah area after he returned home on Sunday at about 5.30pm. Detectives and forensic experts went to the scene and found the victim’s body lying on a blood-splattered bedroom floor.

“The woman’s body had several stab wounds and multiple bruises as a result of the severe attacks,” said Brigadier Abdullah Khamis Al Hadid, chief of police operations at RAK Police. He said a kitchen knife and other tools used in the killing were found at the scene.

Police said there were signs of an apparent struggle at the scene. Al Hadid said the victim’s 21-year-old son broke down the door of their house after he had knocked for a long time and his mother didn’t answer.

“The young man was so shocked when he found that his mother had been killed in such a horrible manner,” said the officer.

A source close to the family told police during initial investigations that the husband had phoned him and informed him that he had killed his wife and asked that he take care of his children. RAK Police issued an arrest warrant for the husband and began a nationwide search for him.

The man later handed in himself to Abu Dhabi Police who then transferred him to Police in RAK to be charged. The couple’s three children, the 21-year-old son and two daughters aged 16 and 13, are now under the guardianship of Ras Al Khaimah Police.
