A maid who was convicted of murdering her employer’s four-month-old baby has appealed her death sentence.

Her lawyer said his client was mentally ill at the time of the incident. The Indonesian woman was sentenced to death by Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance after she was found guilty of killing the Emirati girl.

The verdict was later upheld by the appeal court. However, despite originally confessing to the crime, the maid challenged the verdict at Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation, which has now ordered that her case be heard again by the appeal court.

The court also said that the woman must undergo a psychiatric examination before the next hearing. During the cassation hearing, the maid denied deliberately harming the baby girl, named Malak, saying she dropped the child by mistake.

“She was under severe emotional pressure and fatigue when she confessed to prosecutors that she assaulted the baby, which led to the child’s death,” said the woman’s lawyer. Official records show that the maid took the baby girl from the bedroom, which was fitted with CCTV.

Prosecutors claim she then repeatedly hit the baby’s head against a wooden table. The infant died after nearly two weeks in a coma. Earlier the maid allegedly told prosecutors that she attacked the child to get back at a colleague, who looked after the baby and of whom she was jealous.

The case has been adjourned until July 10.
