IPL in the UAE: Why Lasith Malinga was to blame for Mumbai's defeat

Lasith Malinga may have picked up four wickets but he was still taking responsibility for Mumbai Indians defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 7 opener in Abu Dhabi.

Defending champions Mumbai crashed to a 41 run defeat to Kolkata after after half-centuries from Manish Pandey and Jacques Kallis propelled Kolkata to 163.

The total proved too much for Mumbai who could only muster 122-7 in their 20 overs, and Malinga was left ruing his own failings afterwards.

"We bowled really well in the first 10 overs, but let them off the hook after that. We let Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey build a very large partnership and then they had a couple of really big overs," Malinga told the IPL's official website.

"What really cost us the game was the catch I dropped of Kallis when he was on 34."

Malinga could at least take some solace from his fine bowling, making light of Abu Dhabi's quick surface to post figures of 4-23, including the big wicket of Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir.

"I bowled well and it was good to be among wickets straight away. We lost as a team, which is disappointing, but this was just the first game and the team is confident we will gain momentum as we go forward into the tournament," said Malinga, who captained Sri Lanka to World T20 glory earlier this month.

"We will treat this match as a learning experience and improve upon the various aspects going forward," he added.
