Nearly 1,500 drivers have been caught driving at speeds of 200kph or more on Abu Dhabi roads in the first three months of the year.

Figures issued by Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate show that 1,469 motorists were nabbed between January and March.

The speeders were caught by both mobile and fixed speed cameras on various roads. Brigadier Husain Ahmed Al Harthi, director of traffic and patrols, said: “Traffic police are tough on motorists who drive above the speed limit on the highways and internal roads in the capital. We have increased patrol officers, radars and surveillance cameras on all the dangerous roads.”

He said the force will apprehend any motorists participating in road races or dangerous stunts with their vehicles or motorbikes, including those who practise drifting. He said the force is also keen on toughening regulations to reduce accidents as they claim the lives of innocent people. Al Harthi said the police have also stepped up traffic awareness campaigns to promote safe driving and reduce crashes.

The cars of speeders are impounded for a month and the driver is fined Dhs2,000 and receives 12 black points.
