A domestic worker is facing assault charges after beating up an 80-year-old man he was tasked with looking after because the elderly employer worked him too hard.

The houseboy told police that he lashed out because the old man never gave him a moment’s rest. Officers said the 20-year-old was caught on CCTV beating the elderly Emirati with a stick.

Police in Dibba, Fujairah, arrested the suspect after receiving a call from the victim’s son, who had hired the 20-year-old houseboy, saying his father had been beaten by the suspect.

The Asian worker told police that he handed out beatings to the old man because he was being overworked.

“My boss was very demanding and would not let me relax or even sleep,” the houseboy said during interview. Police believe the beatings had been dished out regularly for about a month before they were caught on camera. The CCTV had been installed by the victim’s son following complaints from his father that he was being assaulted.

“The video footage showed the houseboy beating up the old man with sticks on many occasions. The pictures also revealed that the worker had also tried to strangle his employer,” said a policeman. Officers said the domestic worker initially denied assaulting the old man, but when police showed him the video in which he was caught attacking his employer, he admitted to lashing out at the old man with sticks.

The Asian houseboy has been referred to Fujairah Public Prosecution on charges of assault.
