Family of Kerry Winter seeks closure five years after murder

The brother of murdered Kerry Winter has issued a challenge to friends and former colleagues of her killer Mark Arnold in a bid to find her remains.

Arnold, Kerry’s obsessive former lover, was convicted of the August 2008 murder in Dubai, but he refuses to reveal how he disposed of her body. As the fifth anniversary of her death approaches Kerry’s brother, Kurt Winter, said: “My understanding is that there are people who know, who could inform us, and put our minds at rest. The question is: are they brave enough to chat to me?”

Kurt, who spent months in Dubai searching for his sister, believes that former friends and colleagues of Arnold may hold the key to finding her body, but have been too afraid to reveal what happened.

Speaking from his home in South Africa, Kurt said: “There were people implicated in having some involvement in getting rid of the body. They were never prosecuted. It would be nice if they would give us an insight into exactly what happened.

“We don’t want them to get in to any trouble. We would not be reporting them to anybody. Other people have come forward and given us information - it would be good to piece everything together. We don’t have a clue what really happened, so if anybody wanted to tell me I’m not going to run to the police.”

Kurt says he would come to Dubai for a last search if there was a chance to find Kerry. The men Kurt wants to speak to are expats from the UK, New Zealand and Pakistan. The Winter family also wants to find out what happened to Kerry’s belongings, which were taken by Dubai Police as possible evidence. Kurt said: “The last we knew of them was that they were in Bur Dubai Police Station. I would hope they are still there.

“I think it would help my mother to have something of Kerry’s.” At present, the last known sightings of Kerry are by neighbours who saw her being attacked by Arnold with a baseball bat outside her Al Barsha home on August 20, 2008.

Arnold, 47, who is in Dubai Central Jail serving a life sentence, still maintains he drove Kerry into the desert in her own car after the attack, cleaned up her wounds and left her there alive. Her car was found in Al Sufouh with traces of blood inside. The theory used by the prosecution in court was that Arnold, a British expat, who worked for an interior design firm, put her body into his boat and dumped her in the Arabian Gulf.

Kerry, originally from Johannesburg in South Africa, worked as an events organiser and had dated Arnold for five years. After they split up, he stalked her continuously. She would have celebrated her 40th birthday in June. Criminal lawyer Yousuf Hammad, who defended Arnold, said there is no further appeal available.
