Ex-Real Madrid and Juventus star Fabio Cannavaro jailed for entering his own home

Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was both a player and assistant boss at at UAE's Al Ahli, has been handed a 10-month jail sentence.

Cannavaro, 41, was convicted for entering his own home illegally - breaking a police seal to do so after his villa had been seized as part of a planning abuse investigation.

Cannavaro was handed a custodial sentence along with his brother Paolo, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, and his wife Daniela Arenoso. All three were found guilty of breaching the order.

However, the former Real Madrid and Juventus defender won't be starting his stay in prison any time soon.

The trio have appealed their sentence meaning they are suspended for now until a review of the case has been carried out.

Cannavaro, who won the Ballon d'Or after Italy's success in 2006, spent four years in the UAE, finishing his playing career with Dubai-based Ahli before moving upstairs.

He took over as assistant boss to Cosmin Olariou at the beginning of the 2013-14 season, helping the Red Knights clinch their first league title since 2009. Ahli also won the domestic League Cup that year.

The Italian, regarded as one of the finest defenders of his generation, is now in charge of Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrande after replacing compatriot Marcello Lippi at the end of last season.
