Egypt court hands 37 Morsi loyalists five years in jail for protesting

A misdemeanours court in Cairo's Nasr City district sentenced on Tuesday 37 supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to five years in jail for unlawful assembly and protesting.

The defendants were arrested during pro-Morsi protests last December, after a law issued in November had begun to ban protests without prior permit from authorities.

Since Morsi's ouster early July, security has cracked down on his Muslim Brotherhood group and its supporters. Thousands have been arrested and hundreds killed in clashes with security.
