A driver had a lucky escape after his car veered off the road and plunged into a creek in Ras Al Khaimah.

RAK Police said the incident took place on Saturday evening as the Asian man was driving along Corniche Road.

A brake malfunction caused him to lose control of the vehicle, and the car powered over a pavement before it crashed into the creek. A senior officer at RAK Police said the force was notified about 11pm about a vehicle that had fallen into the water.

“The car had passed through a gap between the metal barriers along the creek, after the driver lost control and rolled into the water,” said the officer. “Part of the car was hanging on a boat docked at the creek,” he added. The officer said the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was able to open the car door and clamber onto the boat before rescuers arrived at the scene.

The lucky man was not hurt in the incident. The boat belonged to some fishermen who were not on board at the time. Civil defence staff used a crane to lift the vehicle out of the water. RAK Police said they have recorded similar events in recent years along the same stretch of creek.

Four people have died and two others were injured in similar incidents of their cars plunging into the water.
