Divorced pair ‘can’t remarry’ after officials refuse to approve new wedding papers

A couple that wanted to reunite following their divorce have had their new marriage contract rejected.

Abu Dhabi Family Court refused to approve the contract for the Arab couple because the man had earlier divorced her according to Sharia law, by saying “I divorce you” three times.

Official records show the Arab man had divorced his wife, with whom he had children, after the pair had some disputes. After the divorce, the woman returned to her home country. The man later travelled to the woman’s home and asked for a reconciliation so they could bring up their children together.

After seeking permission from her parents, the woman agreed to remarry the man. The couple said they then went to an Islamic marriage office in the woman’s home country and officials allowed them to tie the knot again. The pair said Islamic scholars told them their divorce could be revoked because they made a decision to separate while angry. The office also gave the couple a new marriage contract.

After returning to Abu Dhabi, the couple tried to have their new marriage certificate attested. But officials there refused to stamp it as the couple had divorced. According to Sharia law, when a man divorces his wife, he cannot remarry her until the woman had married another man and subsequently divorced him.
