Can speed climbing become a seriously popular sport? Watch Danyil Boldyrev's world record

Rock climbing is hard - very, very hard. Yet seeing Danyil Boldyrev in action almost seems surreal.

Nicknamed the 'Usain Bolt of speed climbing', Boldyrev can scale a high wall faster than many people can sprint - perhaps not the Jamaican Olympic champion, but many people.

Fans of Spiderman will be able to testify how exciting it can be to see someone fly up a wall at terrifying speed, and now Boldyrev has brought the fantasy to life.

Having recently set the world record, Boldyrev is becoming a big hero in his homeland of Ukraine and the above video has gone viral this week with profiles being written about the star of the sport.

He is the top-ranked speed climber in the world, according to the rankings provided by the International Federation of Sport Climbing and his world record of 5.60 seconds is truly remarkable.

Boldyrev reportedly travels at 6.0 mph, which is the equivalent of a 10-minute mile.

To put that in further context, Business Insider worked out that he is able to climb a 4.5-story wall in the same time that Bolt takes to run 60m.

According to Climbing Business Journal, speed climbing is the "fastest growing aspect" of a fast developing sport. It's clear to see why.

Speed climbing quite obviously lends itself to exciting video footage and would likely be an exhilarating sport to be broadcast on TV given the explosive, fast-paced nature of the competition.

With attention spans as short as ever amongst sports fans, speed climbing appears to fit the bill perfectly.

You may not have previously heard of Boldyrev, but at the rate of his climbing he is growing in stature within the sporting world. He really is climbing up the proverbial sporting profile wall, and it's very exciting to see.
