Cairo court gives Brotherhood's El-Beltagy 1 year in jail for insulting judges

Leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Mohamed El-Beltagy was sentenced to a year in prison on Saturday for insulting the judges in a trial in which he and other Brotherhood members are accused of inciting violence against protesters outside the presidential palace last year.

Cairo's Criminal Court gave El-Beltagy the sentence after he accused the court of bias during Saturday's proceedings.

El-Beltagy and 14 other co-defendants are accused of inciting the murder and torture of opposition protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012.

At least ten people were killed in the clashes, triggered when then-president Mohamed Morsi issued a decree elevating his decisions above judicial review.
