Neymar was the star of the show, scoring twice in the opening period including an equaliser after Fernando Torres opened the scoring after just 40 seconds.

Atletico were ahead again through Raul Garcia’s penalty, but an own goal by Miranda and Neymar’s second sealed the tie, which
the hosts ended with nine men after red cards for Gabi and Mario Suarez – and it could have been worse as Arda Turan somehow escaped dismissal for throwing his boot at the assistant referee.

The Turkish midfielder launched his footwear towards the touchline in anger but fortunately it sailed over the official’s head.

Diego Simeone had promised that his team would make a fast start but even he must have been stunned when they took the lead in the first minute, with Guilherme Siqueira winning the ball on the halfway line and finding Torres, who turned past Javier Mascherano and rifled a low shot inside the left upright.

Barca responded well and promptly launched a series of attacks, with Ivan Rakitic seeing a curled free-kick tipped wide by
home keeper Jan Oblak.

The leveller soon followed, and it was brilliantly fashioned by the visitors’ potent front trio as Messi broke free by superbly nutmegging Mario Suarez and then found Luis Suarez, who released an inch-perfect through ball into the stride of Neymar, who raced into the box before sending a low right-footed shot past Oblak’s dive.

The action continued to come thick and fast in an absorbing encounter, with Torres dangerously flicking on a near-post corner
before Neymar was flagged inches offside to prevent another clear run on goal.

Antoine Griezmann ran onto a cross from Siqueira to volley straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but then Atleti were back ahead
when referee Jesus Gil Manzano awarded a contentious penalty even though Mascherano appeared to foul Juanfran outside the box, and Garcia stepped up to rifle the spot-kick into the left corner.

Once more, though, the lead did not last long as Barca levelled for the second time.

Rakitic was heavily involved, seeing his shot blocked by Jose Maria Gimenez and delivering the resulting corner to the near post, where Sergio Busquets flicked on and sawthe ball disastrously sliced into his own net by the hapless Miranda.

A remarkable first 45 minutes still had several more twists as Barca effectively sealed their passage into the last four with a superb counter-attacking goal.

But again there was controversy as Siqueira’s cross was hammered goalwards by Griezmann and smashed against Jordi Alba’s arm.

This time Manzano ignored the penalty appeals and Messi immediately sprang forward to release the marauding Alba, whose squared ball back across goal was easily converted by Neymar.

Atletico were reduced to 10 men during the interval as skipper Gabi was sent off for an altercation with Neymar in the tunnel, and Barca were in full control from the start of the second half, as Suarez saw an effort blocked by Miranda.

The game was often slowed to walking pace as Atletico struggled to get out of their own half, and the rhythm was also disrupted by a number of substitutions.

One of the entrants was new Atletico signing Cani, who soon produced a good save from ter Stegen with a fierce volley, before Messi squandered a decent opportunity with a weakly struck shot.

Atletico were reduced to nine men through the dismissal of Suarez for two deserved yellow cards, and Barca eased into a semi-final date with Villarreal or Getafe.
