The TicketWednesday in politics: Buzz, buzz, buzz about Election Day, and more
Wednesday and again on Thursday and then on Friday and all weekend, the politics buzz will be about one thing: Election Day.
The topics, or rather the questions, that will be thought about and talked about include: What happened and why and what it means going forward? And — brace yourself -- don't be surprised if there's talk right away about who and what to look for in the 2016 presidential race.
Tuesday provided a lot of answers. President Barack Obama was re-elected with 303 Electoral Votes to Mitt Romney's 206, Republicans retained control of the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Democrats maintained a majority in the U.S. Senate. The political alignment in Washington is what it has been for the past two years.
But, again, that raises questions: Is there more gridlock ahead in Washington? Will congressional Republicans shift closer to the political center? Will a second-term Obama be more accommodating with congressional Republicans? And what about that fiscal cliff?
Questions, questions, questions — mainly for the pundits and the pols.
And then there is this: Wednesday marks the third anniversary of the House passing the Affordable Health Care for America Act, legislation that set the stage for what eventually would be called Obamacare. Obamacare was a focal point of the 2012 presidential campaign.
And this: Wednesday also marks the 40th anniversary of Richard Nixon's re-election as president. How that played out is no secret. The Watergate scandal forced him to resign on Aug. 9, 1974.
