The craziest World Island idea ever

The craziest World Island idea ever

The $1.4bn World Islands just off Dubai are already home to the Lebanon clubbing island and Greenland - but there was once a crazier plan…

Master developer Nakheel has revealed they had to block one particularly nutty proposal – an island in the shape of Darth Vader’s helmet.

Brendan Jack, head of sustainability and environment, told 7DAYS: “It was about 2007. They approached us saying they wanted a Darth Vader helmet-shaped island.

“That seemed fairly serious – but it was a concept that was just too far out.”

After five stalled years due to the economic downturn, Nakheel hope their ambitious 263-country plans for The World will be complete by 2020.

Islands where construction is now beginning include Germany, Taiwan, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden and St Petersburg.

The British owner of Little Britain, Safi Qurashi, says he will announce his plans for the island this summer.

Greenland was a gift from Nakheel to Dubai’s royal family.

Nakheel also revealed that another developer wanted a mermaid-shaped island.

Dubai has seen some other ambitious projects over the years…
