Four killed in deadly Sheikh Zayed Road crash

The huge cost of caring for people injured in UAE traffic accidents was revealed by the head of Dubai Police on Tuesday as he launched a new campaign to snare speeders.

A nine-month-old baby was among four people killed in a deadly Dubai road crash when their vehicle hit a broken down SUV in the middle of the busy six-lane Sheikh Zayed Road, UAE daily Gulf News has reported.

The vehicle the four Yemeni victims were travelling in crashed into a SUV that had been stopped in the third lane on Sheikh Zayed Road, sending it 40 meters into the right lane.

Witnesses at the scene explained that the driver of the SUV, a Jordanian woman, was reportedly trying to warn drivers that she had broken down.

Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP) told the paper that the driver of the SUV had been detained by Dubai Police following the incident.

“Pending investigations will reveal the primary and main cause behind the accident. Dubai Police’s mechanical experts will report to us on whether the woman’s car could have been pulled away from the road without having endangered the lives of others. We will also be expecting further technical reports about how the accident happened,” Bu Farousha told the paper.

“Onsite investigations revealed that shortly before the crash, a motorist warned the Jordanian woman and advised her to remove her car because it was parked in a hazardous way,” BuFarousha was reported as saying.

The latest crash brings the number of deaths to 11 since the beginning of Ramadan, Bu Farousha said they were caused by driver errors.

“We have noticed that motorists tend to react wrongfully and/or dangerously… this is a very serious and hazardous indicator that many motorists do lack the knowledge of how to deal with their cars amidst road surprises,” he said.

Adding, “I’m dearly sorry for having lost that number of persons in the past few days.”
