Dubai aims to breaks world's largest fireworks display record

Fresh of its Expo 2020 win, Dubai has set its sights on a new world record: the emirate will light up for what could be the world's largest fireworks display this New Year's Eve.

A six-minute display featuring 450,000 fireworks and set to a unique soundtrack, will take over Dubai's iconic locations including the Palm Jumeirah and The World islands, covering a distance of 99.4 km.

The sure-to-be-impressive display will be visible from several locations in the emirate. Hotels on the Palm will be hosting parties and events to celebrate the occassion.

Following the record attempt, another 15-minute display will take place at Jumeirah beach. Elsewhere at Downtown Dubai, there will be a 20-minute display at the Burj Khalifa, which will overlap with the Palm Jumeirah fireworks.

Dubai is no stranger to elaborate fireworks displays; some notable ones include the opening of Atlantis The Palm hotel in 2008 and the unveiling of Burj Khalifa in 2010.

The current world record was set by Kuwait in 2012 for a 64-minute display that stretched over 5km.
