UAE's Asian Cup hero officially recognised by Guinness World Records for fastest goal

UAE striker Ali Mabkhout has been officially recognised by the Guinness World Records for scoring the fastest goal in Asian Cup history.

The 24-year-old entered his name into folklore after finding the back of the net after just 14 seconds of his side's 2-1 win over Bahrain in Group C.

Springing Bahrain's offside trap, the prolific striker latches onto Omar Abdulrahman's delightful throughball before poking the ball past the advancing 'keeper.

Mabkhout's blink-and-you'll-miss-it strike was faster than Kuwait’s Fathi Kameel against China in 1976 and China’s Xie Yuxin against Japan in 1992, both of which were scored inside the first minute.

Makbhout, who plays his club football for Abu Dhabi giants Al Jazira, eventually went onto claim the Golden Boot at the 2015 Asian Cup after netting five goals to help the UAE to a third place finish.

"I wanted to take home the top scorer award," said Mabkhout after the UAE's 3-2 win over Iraq in the third-place playoff match.

"It is very good for me to achieve this. But I will not stop there. I will continue to get better and score goals."

A host of clubs have since been linked with his signature, with the player himself admitting he one day hopes to ply his trade in Europe.

His immediate focus though remains on Al Jazira, who are top of the Arabian Gulf League heading into the final weeks of the 2014-15 season.
