Ex-Al Jazeera Sports host blasts 'farcical' Qatar World Cup decision

On Tuesday it was revealed that a FIFA taskforce had recommended the 2022 tournament be held during the winter months in order to combat the sweltering temperatures that regularly reach 50 degrees in the summer.

It was announced that the World Cup is set to be held during November and December, which drew instant criticism due to the disturbance it would cause domestic leagues around the world.

Former England striker Gary Lineker, who previously worked for Al Jazeera Sports (now BeIN SPORTS) condemned “farcical” FIFA bosses for the decision.

While Lineker, England’s second-highest goal scorer of all time, acknowledges the move may give his country a better chance of success, he launched a fierce attack on Sepp Blatter.

He said: “This has been farcical from start to finish.

“It took them two-and-a-half years to work out it would be too warm.

“It should have been put in the bidding process that it would be in winter.

“All this cock and bull about air conditioned stadiums in which to play. You can’t suddenly move the goalposts. It’s an embarrassment to the leadership – the ineptitude of the leadership. It’s so appalling, so hopeless yet these guys are untouchable. But they are still there in their jobs.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is among those to have backed the move, saying it "makes sense" while former Everton star Tim Cahill has given his unequivocal backing to Qatar to stage a successful tournament.
