Afghanistan's prolonged election crisis was extended further on Thursday when the United Nations said an audit of votes would not be completed until September 10 and the inauguration of a new president was expected soon after.

"A rigorous and credible audit required time, but could be completed around 10 September," a UN statement said.

"The inauguration of the new president should then be possible soon after."
