Afghan policeman shoots, wounds female lawmaker

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan policeman has opened fire and wounded a female lawmaker in the country's capital, Kabul, during what authorities described as a "dispute" between the two.

Lawmaker Maryam Koofi was recovering Wednesday after the shooting the previous night.

Earlier reports had said that Koofi was shot by unidentified gunmen, raising speculation of another attack on an official. On Tuesday, Afghanistan's deputy public works minister was abducted from his car in Kabul.

The Ministry of Interior later identified Koofi's shooter as a police officer. It says the two were in a "dispute" and that the policeman is under investigation.

Koofi is a parliamentarian from the northern province of Takhar. Her sister, Fawzia Koofi, is also a member of parliament and a well-known women's rights activist.
