Upping the ante in terms of violence seems like the normal thing to do in Hindi films today what with audiences not shying away from grisly deaths on screen.

Here’s a list of 26 films from Bollywood, Hollywood and the world, in no particular order, that are far more violent than normal action films.

1. Rakta Charitra

alt
alt

Ram Gopal Varma has a penchant for violence, as will be seen by the number of times his films appear in this list. He first made his name with a film that had mindless violence that turned out to be a hit. As the years went by, Ramu sobered a bit but none of this can betray the fact that Rakta Charitra stands out as one of the most violent Hindi films of all time. The story of Andhra Pradesh leader Paritala Ravindra’s assassination features so much blood and gore from lead actors Vivek Oberoi and South actor Suriya that you can be rest assured this movie will never come to small screens ever.

2. Bandit Queen

alt
alt

Shekhar Kapur’s ode to Phoolan Devi has to be the most violent movie among all his directorial ventures. The scenes of physical and sexual abuse in the movie are all too hard-hitting because at least some of it was real. And the scene where Seema Biswas, who plays Phoolan Devi, is stripped, beaten and sent to fetch water from a well in a village in full view of villagers is traumatically violent to say the least.

3. Satya

alt
alt

Ram Gopal Varma first made headlines for this movie about the underworld that introduced the world to Manoj Bajpai and Anurag Kashyap’s writing. The crime-thriller movie that showcases how an innocent man can get sucked into the vortex of the underworld was done through many killings, mostly by Bhiku Mhatre (Bajpai).

4. Gangs of Wasseypur

alt
alt

Manoj Bajpai and Anurag Kashyap along with Nawazuddin Siddique and Tigmanshu Dhulia once again returned to fine form with Gangs of Wasseypur, India’s answer to Godfather. In the midst of telling the story of a coal mafia also details shootouts, gang wars, caste murders, throat slitting, beheadings and the final sadistic blood splattering shootout at the end of the series, this is definitely the most bloodiest film of 2012, if not the decade.

5. Ghajini

alt
alt

Aamir Khan shaved his head off, build an eight-pack and put on weird fake tattoos all over his body but none of that compared to the sheer violence in Ghajini. The violent death of Asin and the cold matter-of-fact revenge exacted by Aamir Khan worked its charm on audiences, making it the first Rs 100 crore film in India.

6. Matrubhoomi

alt
alt

The full title of this movie is Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women. There is no way you can make a movie that imagines a future where female foeticide reduces the existence of women to such an extent that the only way to justify having one is via bride buying and sharing her with other men. The movie then turns to themes of bestiality and torture. This is probably the most disturbing Hindi movie in this list.

7. Kill Bill

alt
alt

Trust Quentin Tarantino to come in this list. The master filmmaker truly mesmerized even his staunchest critics with the story of The Bride in Kill Bill. The sheer blood-letting and fights of all kinds that the two-part movie series entails makes it a pleasure to watch. From martial arts, to spaghetti westerns, necrophilia and assassination squads, this series has it all.

8. Apocalypto

alt
alt

Mel Gibson sure knows how to portray violence and what better way than to use ancient Mayans to show the world some real violence. Apocalypto is violent with images of animal and human disembowelment in full regalia but that is also why it is so effective. The fact that lesser-known actors have been used in this film also allows the audience to focus more on the action rather than look for familiar faces.

9. Dushman

alt
alt

Dushman is a deeply disturbing film featuring one of the most demented villains Gokul Pandit, played by Ashutosh Rana. The actor rapes and kills Sonia Sehgal brutally before he is brought to justice by Sonia’s twin sister Naina, both roles essayed by Kajol. This Hindi remake of Eye For An Eye definitely upped the violence meter.

10. Gulaal

alt
alt

An Anurag Kashyap movie that failed to find release for the longest time suddenly became news for its portrayal of student university politics set in Rajasthan. The movie is soaked with violence to such an extent that the title of the film refers to the blood that is shed throughout the length of this movie. Kashyap has admitted Gulaal is the film he made when he was the most angry with the system around him.

11. Django Unchained

alt
alt

Another Tarantino entry, Django Unchained features the director’s trademark bloody violence. The film tells the story of a bounty hunter who frees a slave and partners up with him to liberate his wife from the hands of a fearsome plantation owner. The torturous lives of slaves as well as Tarantino’s hallmark violence has generated a huge fury in the US. In an ironical twist, the film is also competing in the Oscars in five categories this year including Best Picture.

12. Shool

alt
alt

Another classic from Manoj Bajpai written by Ram Gopal Varma, Shool portrays the police-criminal nexus in Bihar along with votebank politics. This one deserves to be seen for the honest police officer’s role enacted by Bajpai and Sayaji Shinde, who plays the psychopathic politician Bachu Yadav. So good is the film that it won the National Award for Best Hindi Film upon release.

13. Gangaajal

alt
alt

Working along the same themes as Shool, Gangaajal makes it to this list for the fact that it was based on the real life Bhagalpur acid attacks. Prakash Jha got a new lease with this film while bringing the story of the once prosperous Indian state into limelight.

14. Oldboy

alt
alt

No, we will not add Sanjay Gupta’s ridiculously copied Zinda in this list when there is Oldboy to savour. This Korean film is violence typified with such cool action moves that you can’t help but go along with the flow of this film. Quentin Tarantino has praised Oldboy publicly many times and Spike Lee is all set to release an American version of this movie later this year.

15. Irreversible

alt
alt

Roger Ebert says this movie is so violent and cruel that many will find it unwatchable. But watch you must. This French film starring Monica Belluci employs a non-linear storytelling structure as two men try to avenge the brutal rape of a girlfriend. The rape itself is horrendous and the revenge even more so. The movie’s violence gave steam to a new genre of French movies known as New French Extremity movement.

16. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

alt
alt

You know the name but you are sure to have missed the movie’s release in India directed by David Fincher because he refused to edit the violent rape scenes in this movie. It’s a shame considering how well-made The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo really is. Not to mention that Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig top it off with brilliant performances. Sony Home Pictures launched the uncut DVD last year. Grab it while you can.

17. Passion of the Christ

alt
alt

For a movie about Christianity, Passion Of The Christ sure had a lot of violence and not of the simple kind. This Mel Gibson directorial that starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ was replete with flogging, graphic torture and brutalality inflicted before Jesus was executed. It has been referred to as anti-Semitic as well as the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre for the violence it depicts.

18. Hostel

alt
alt

Eli Roth invented a whole new genre of violence with 'Hostel'. The gore and level of violence in Hostel has to be seen to be believed as it portrays young American backpackers looking to satisfy their libido and machismo. You will either fall violently sick or be wildly entertained by this.

19. 300

alt
alt

Gerard Butler will probably never do a role as iconic as Leonidas leading a paltry 300 soldiers to glory against Xerxes in 300. Based on a graphic novel series called 300, this movie features some brilliant action choreography, iconic dialogues and a violently satisfying storyline. The stylized shooting style and attempt to make it as close to the graphic novel earns ‘300’ extra points.

20. Anjaam

alt
alt

Before he taught the country to romance, Shah Rukh Khan reveled in playing the bad guy. Remember Baazigar and Darr? However, Anjaam makes it to this list for the sheer craziness of the characters. While Khan kills off Dixit’s husband and frames her for a murder, the latter is tortured in prison and suffers a miscarriage before vowing vengeance. The revenge comes in the form of choking to death with rupee notes, chewing off flesh and multiple stabbings.

21. Easterm Promises

alt
alt

David Cronenberg ups the ante for violence significantly in Eastern Promises, a film where Viggo Mortensen shines as Russian mafia driver Nikolai Luzhin. His job profile also includes dumping dead bodies up the Thames river. The film features explicit violent scenes with knife killings and gun violence apart from drug addiction, rape and prostitution.

22. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

alt
alt

'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' does not really need an introduction. The horror movie actually invented the entire slasher genre of films. So popular is the series that although it first appeared in 1974, a 3D movie will be released later this year as well, making it the seventh movie in the franchise. It also made Leatherface one of the most scary villains with his mask made of human skin, butcher’s apron and the famous chainsaw with which he loves hacking into almost anything.

23. Tere Naam

alt
alt

Salman Khan played one of the most twisted characters in this film called Radhe. A goon who loses his heart to a traditional girl, Radhe stalks her into submission but is outdone by rival gang members who bang his head into stell posts at an abandoned railway station. Upon losing his mind, he is sent to a traditional ashram to recover but finds his love has committed suicide while he was being cured. According to reports, Khan will act in a film called Radhe based on this 'Tere Naam' character later this year.

24. American History X

alt
alt

Edward Norton plays a brutal neo-Nazi and prides himself on being a white supremacist. So much so that he doesn’t mind killing off a petty robber by putting the victim’s mouth on a roadside curb and slamming him on his head. The amount of hate white supremacy can have is best proffered in this film that also sees Norton deliver the role of a lifetime.

25. Scarface

alt
alt

Written by Oliver Stone, directed by Brian de Palma and Tony Montana played by Al Pacino, 'Scarface' is a classic all the way through. Enacting the role of a mafia boss is difficult without showing extreme violence, strong profanity and drug use. While these factors made the movie debut with negative words of mouth, over the years popular opinion has turned this film into an instant classic. 'Scarface' is one stylized violent flick that is also one of the best gangster epics ever made.

26. 'Rambo 2'

alt
alt

'Rambo 2', that affirmed Sylvestor Stallone’s position as a top action star, is also one of the biggest propaganda film in which violence plays the central character. Sent to Vietnam to rescue POWs, Rambo is caught in a rescue attempt and is tortured brutally, including being lowered half-naked into a hole swarming with leeches and other dangerous creepy crawlies. When Rambo gets a chance to wreck havoc on the enemy camp he does so with disdain. From shooting arrows with deadly accuracy to knifing his enemies and exploding riverboats, Rambo does it all.

This is not a comprehensible list of the most violent movies; rather this is a collection of the most different types of genres that employ violence to the hilt. Which other movies do you think should make the cut?
