The worst 20 players of Euro 2012

Euro 2012 was a resounding success on the pitch but a plethora of players will spend their summer vacations thinking of what could have been at the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

Much was expected from the Netherlands but the Oranje did not pick up a single victory thanks to the drama within the squad that derailed their campaign.

Germany, who were one of the tournament favourites, won their first three group games and then brushed aside Greece in the quarter-final before they were once again undone by old foes Italy in the last four.

France went out with a whimper in the last eight while Portugal seemed to be peaking at the right time only to lose to Spain in a penalty shoot-out at the semi-final stage.

Now that the smoke has cleared, we take a look at the lowest-ranked players who have appeared in at least 40 per cent of their nation's games.

It is not surprising that we find almost the entire Republic of Ireland XI at the bottom of our ratings index as the Boys in Green were outshone frequently in Group C.

Meanwhile, two goalkeepers share the dubious honour of being ranked amongst the lowest at Euro 2012 in the form of Greece shot-stopper Kostas Chalkias and Republic of Ireland custodian Shay Given, who conceded 13 goals between them in the tournament.

Netherlands' disastrous campaign sees defender John Heitinga and more surprisingly Robin van Persie make the list, as the Arsenal striker could not carry over his scintillating displays at club level into the international arena.

Poland failed to advance past the group stage with Dariusz Dudka and Marcin Wasilewski failed to win over any fans with their sub-par displays for the co-hosts.

Ireland led the way with eight players in the index, while Greece had four men make the list even though they advanced to the quarter-finals in a competition that many in the bottom 20 will soon want to forget.
