New Delhi, June 8 (IANS) The national committee to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Motilal Nehru Friday decided to organise various activities, including seminars and conferences, to highlight his contribution to a liberal ideology during India's freedom struggle.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was also attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, union ministers Pranab Mukharjee, A.K.Antony, Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid, Ambika Soni, Selja and others.
Participants suggested bringing out of a new biography, books and other publications to popularise his contribution to the Indian polity. It was also suggested to establish chairs in his name in educational institutions.
Suggestions were also made to bring out commemorative coins and stamps and to launch a website dedicated to the history of India's freedom struggle.
It was also suggested that the liberal ideology and politics of Pandit Motilal Nehru should be made relevant to today's generation and the fact that he laid the foundation of our constitution should be highlighted.
A leading lawyer and freedom fighter, Motilal Nehru was born on May 6, 1861. He was the father of independent India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
