Prediction of Box office success for a film is a hazardous guess, but when the predictions are backed up by a trend analysis from the past and backed with the figures interspersed with the rationale for making the premises then it has the potential to hit the bull's eye. This column would initiate a trend of this kind and would test waters to see whether the hypotheses are correct and the first confident forward paves the way for a solid foundation so no better way to start this column than through the analysis of TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS.

One of the underlining motifs of Kangana Ranaut's career has been the unconventional roles that she has played in her acting career, which has turned out to be a heady concoction of box office success as also praise from the critics. The saga of unconventional started for her when she associated with Anand L Rai for TANU WEDS MANU which did a business of more than Rs. 35 crore. Kangana Ranaut was perhaps amongst few actresses at that time that had the confidence to essay the role of a small town girl and slipped into the skin of the character in such an effortless manner that it turned out to be amongst the biggest grocers.

TANU WEDS MANU being shot on a small budget and actual locations, the profits that it garnered for the production house also in some ways was responsible for the emergence of a vertical of film making

whose locations where quaint places, the real India so to say and it brought about a sense of identity with the masses.

TANU WEDS MANU was no fluke for Kananga as she took her USP of enacting the role of an unconventional character and enacting it in such a manner to make it look like real in QUEEN to make it most coveted film both by the critics as also at the box office. Here was an actress who carried QUEEN on her shoulders and carried it with finesse as QUEEN did the business of more than Rs.62 crore. Apart from doing such roaring business QUEEN also underlined the fact that it is the small town stories that have the quotient for success at the box office. Kangana Ranaut belongs to the category of those rare actresses who is more interested in interpreting the character rather than being bothered about looks and appearances. She could perhaps be amongst the few actresses acting in a mainstream movie and not bothered to change her looks and this is what endears her to the audience and brings about the footfalls.

The magnificent collections of TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS at the box office in India as also aboard underlines the fact that Kangana Ranaut is here to stay and she indeed is now the QUEEN of box office who needs good content to entrap the audience to fall in love with her at the box office. It is manifest from the fact that on Friday itself it collected Rs. 28 crore over the weekend in the domestic circuit already while overseas collection was above Rs. 3.50 crore. This stupendous collection has been possible perhaps owing to the fact that we have two Kangana Ranauts to tackle with, one the original Bindaas girl from TANU WEDS MANU while the second one the typical Haryanvi lasse- a character which in all probability has not been interpreted by a mainstream actress so far.

For director Anand L. Rai his association with Kangana Ranaut turned out to be a manna from the heaven as from doing a business of Rs.0.50 crore in STRANGERS to Rs.0.05 crore in THODA LIFE THODA MAGIC to Rs.35+ crore with TANU WEDS MANU and with the sequel on offer from today it has the potential to overhaul the figures of PIKU attained so far.

This heady combination of Anand L. Rai and Kangana Ranaut is going to create a new box office history as the summer vacations have started in India and with no film to compete TWMR by the end of week the way it is going, Rs.50 crore would not be a difficult proposition to achieve. It would also be interesting to watch whether TWMR is able to overhaul the figures of PIKU for the week, as PIKU over a week has collected Rs.39 crore, and if it happens it would indeed be a sweet revenge by Kangana Ranaut over Deepika Padukone.
