Turn on the fun at Zayed Sports City Kids Holiday Camp

School’s out for the summer but fun is in at the Zayed Sports City Kids Holiday Camp, giving kids a safe and enjoyable way to say active.

The full-day camp is currently underway and runs until August 28 in the indoor facilities of Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, open for kids aged 5 to 14. The first two weeks are already sold out but there’s still time to register for the latter half of the camp.

“We’ve limited the summer camp to basically ensure we’ve got the right quality of service,” said Barry Bremner, general manager of Zayed Sports City.

“When we actually ran the last Easter camp, there were about 120 kids. We’ve limited it this time to 30 kids per week and we’ve already sold the first two weeks.”

The camp isn’t specialised, providing many activities and sports that appeal to kids with a wide range of interests, including bowling, table tennis, arts and crafts, fitness circuits, teambuilding challenges, various games, songs and dance programmes, a movie wind-down and the most popular activity – ice skating.

The ice skating coaches on hand at the camp are full-time instructors and work with kids in the exciting “Learn to Skate” programme.

“Ice skating is quite a popular sport at Zayed Sports City,” Bremner said. “I think part of that is actually making it cool in there. When we to do a lot of indoor sports, it’s actually nice to get something as cool as ice skating.”

“I think there’s an energy in the ice rink that the coaches really get the kids to embrace. The kids love it so much and they do it (skating) all the time.”

Along with ensuring the kids have a fun time, the camp also aims to develop children socially and prepare them for when school resumes.

“I think it’s about the way we structure the programme, a lot of it is making new friends, gaining confidence,” said Bremner. “We separate the age groups into a sensible spread. It helps them learn lots of new skills. It’s not just about sport. We’ve got lots of team-building challenges.

“It’s also quite good to try to get them into a routine. Each day we’ve got carefully planned-out activities and it really helps them get into a routine before they go back to school. It’s almost preparing them to go back to school.”

The camp runs daily from 08:30 to 17:30 and the registration fee is Dh900 weekly and Dh250 per day, which includes lunch and a snack.
