Top stars take to the start line at 4th Dubai Women’s Run

Ladies nights are everywhere in the UAE, but empowering ladies mornings – like this weekend’s Dubai Women’s Run – are far and few between, and certainly deserve the support of the community.

The fourth edition of this well-received annual run, taking place bright and early this Friday, November 8, will feature tons of inspiring female striders for you to take a page from and get up and running yourself.

Taking the start line will be Kenyan long-distance track and road runner Tegla Chepkite Loroupe, who holds the world records for 20, 25 and 30 kilometres and previously held the World Marathon Record.

Not only is she a three-time World Half-Marathon champion, and was the first woman from Africa to win the New York City Marathon, she is also a global spokeswoman for peace, women’s rights and education, making her the perfect person to lead the field.

Loroupe will be joined by other renowned athletes including UAE duo Alia Saeed and Betlhem Belayneh, as well as Raha Moharrak, the youngest Arab woman and the first Saudi national to scale Mt. Everest.

Indeed, if you want to be inspired, then be out in force with your girlfriends from 07:00 when the runners set off from Meydan Racecourse in their pursuit of 5K and 10K glory.

There is even a prize category just for Emirati women competing, among many other cash rewards to be claimed thanks to sponsors Dubai Holding, who themselves are contributing a commendable Dh90,000.

Liesa Euton, Race Director, Dubai Women’s Run, commented: “The Dubai Women’s Run has become a major event in the region’s sports events calendar, as exemplified by this year’s impressive list of attendees.

“We look forward to welcoming great runners and even greater women to our event, as examples and inspiration for our 5,000 participants expected at the race.”

As for why a women-only event?

“Our mission is to offer women’s running races which motivate and inspire women to come set the pace. The Run also enables women to be active, fit and involved.

“For some women participating in this run, the motivating factors are the opportunity to run in a supportive and friendly environment and to socialize with other women runners.

“For others, such as competitive female runners it is the opportunity to be part of the front runners instead of feeling that they are the ‘chase’ group.

“An all women’s race lets them experience the rush of being first across the finish line instead of being the first woman across the finish line."

Euton added on the website: “Regard-less of what pace you are setting or what motivates you to cross the finish line, it is the collective power of the group all supporting one another that makes the Dubai Women’s Run so unique and memorable.”

And don’t think you’ll just be there standing on from the sidelines – organisers have even included some entertaining finish line activities for the public, from food and beverage stalls to kids creches, face painting, music and more.
