Syrian violence spills over into Lebanon

At least three people have died and 23 wounded during fierce clashes between Lebanese Sunni Muslims, hostile to Syria's regime, and Alawites who support it, a Lebanese security official said.

"A Sunni and an Alawite were killed and 23 people were wounded in clashes that continued since Friday between people from the neighbourhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh" in the northern city of Tripoli, the official told the AFP news agency on Sunday.

A 17-year-old girl died of her wounds later.

Ten soldiers were among those wounded in the fighting, among them a sergeant whose wounds were critical, the official added.

The two sides fired guns and rocket-propelled grenades at each other in the bloodiest clashes since last June when six people were killed in the wake of demonstrations against the Syrian government.

Sunni-majority Tripoli has in the past few years been the scene of intense clashes between Sunni supporters of the anti-Syrian opposition and Alawite Muslims loyal to a Hezbollah-led alliance backed by Iran and Syria.

    Lebanese army deployed

Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president who is fighting an unprecedented revolt against his government, is from the Alawite community, an offshoot of Shia Islam.

The Lebanese army is deployed on the outskirts of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh, namely near Syria Street which separates the rival neighbourhoods.

Some residents have fled the area while those who stayed behind - both Sunnis and Alawites - said they are afraid that clashes will erupt anew while blaming the other side for the fighting.

"I am paying the price of a war which is not mine," Zeinab Yaghi, a 55-year-old Sunni Muslim mother of five whose house was hit in the crossfire, said.

"I know nothing about politics but supporters of the Damascus regime are causing problems here," she said after fleeing her home with her children.

One Sunni man who declined to be identified said "rockets have been raining down on us since yesterday [Friday]."

"They are constantly provoking us and waving pictures of Bashar al-Assad," he said of his Alawite neighbours, adding however that he was not against the Alawites.

    Anti-Alawite rallies

Some Alawites also expressed concern, saying they were afraid for their lives.

"We are afraid because there is a sectarian spin to things," said Khaled al-Ali, a taxi driver.

"Since the crisis began in Syria we have been treated like foreigners. They provoke us all day long by staging anti-Alawite rallies," he said.

"The imams in the mosques are setting the [Sunnis] against us in their sermons and we constantly receive threats saying we would be expelled from Tripoli if the regime in Syria falls," he added.

The fighting erupted on Friday but subsided by Saturday afternoon after the army negotiated a truce between the two communities, officials said.

"I could not care less what happens in Syria," Mohammed Khaldiye, an Alawite, said.

"I just want to live in peace with my neighbours, in my city" of Tripoli.

Although I understand the west stands to win alot by the infighting of the local populations in the so called "middle east" - at least so long as they fight amongst themselves they have no time to fight the west!... but it is not to be underestimated that the Iranian "Farsis", or the Turks to a point have historically targetted the Arabs and fought them over territory and government. It is a fact that before the savadi state was established in the now-known "Iran", the whole of that region all the way into India was ALL SUNNIS. Also, from almost 1820 till about 1918, end of warld war 1, The remenant of the Ottoman empire was transformed into a "Turkish" empire, pushing the Arabs into a minority in their own lands, and changing everything in the caliphate to a turkish identity and removing its arab identity - including the language which was replaced by Turkish. Even the alphabet was replaced from the Arabic based, into the Latin based alphabet. Then in 1921 came the last crusader, Mustapha ataturk and demolished the ottoman empire and replaced it with a state dominated by the army - ask Rajap Ordoghan about the strength of the Army in Turkish politics where the generals refuse to abide by the rule of the elected prime minister or the president.

i though Imams were supposed to be neutral and preach Islam, but looks like they take sides. even if they are in opposition, they should preach to their followers to be patient and continue to live peacefully with their neighbours...aren't we supposed to be our 'brothers' keepers? why the killings? may Allah touch our hearts.

Actually the Sunni imams are not doing enough to let the people rise. But I don't wish for them to rise against the minority that lives amongst them in peace - as long as they do live in peace! I would rather the Sunni imams raise the emotions of the people so high they rise against their leaders who allow the brutal regime in Syria to kill and mame thousands of innocent syrians most of whom - if not all - are Sunni muslims.
