South African police fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse striking mine workers who were trying to prevent a mass rally by the country's main mining union.
Riot police fired the canisters at the entrance to a stadium in Rustenburg, in the restive northwestern platinum belt, after a march by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) arrived to hold the mass meeting, an AFP correspondent said.
