Saudi activists sue government over driving ban

Two Saudi female activists have filed law suits against the government for refusing to issue them driver's licences and banning them from driving a car, they told AFP on Saturday.

Manal al-Sherif, the icon of an Internet campaign launched last year urging Saudi women to defy a ban on driving, and human rights activist Samar Badawi filed their suits against the interior ministry.

Sherif, who was arrested in May 2011 and detained for 10 days after posting on YouTube a video of herself driving, said she decided to file the lawsuit after having been denied a driver's licence.

"There is no actual law that states woman can't drive" in Saudi Arabia and therefore "no justification for preventing them from issuing a licence," said Sherif, one of the activists behind a "My Right, My Dignity" campaign aimed at ending discrimination against women in Saudi Arabia.

Badawi said the grievance board at the interior ministry had informed her to "follow-up in a week" to confirm a court appointment for her lawsuit.

Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia is the only country where women are not allowed to drive. However, they sit behind the wheel in desert regions away from the capital.

Women in the kingdom who have the financial means hire drivers while others must depend on the goodwill of male relatives.

They also have to be veiled in public and cannot travel unless accompanied by their husbands or a close male relative.

Yes give them their freedom, let them go naked in the street just like most Lebanese women. Shame on you shiat. You are the destroyers of Islamic ethics. Allah will punish you very soon.

The last statement is not true, Women can travel without being accompanied by their husbands or a close male relative the husband or the close relative have to sign a simple request for that.

There are blatant factual errors in this piece. First of all, women are allowed to take taxis, so they are not dependent only on male relatives or hired drivers. Secondly, men accompany their wives, daughters, etc, to passport control and the women then travel from airports by themselves. This, at least, is the reality in Jeddah....Still, the ban on driving is derived from the insecurity of men in this country, not Islam. In fact, much of what is passed off as Islam in this country is nothing of the sort.

Women no needs to leave their home with out husband's or head of family member permission. Islam did not give the permission to female for travelling alone or without male members. The rules of KSA regarding ban on driving I think is better for women. Otherwise they have to go outside alone which will pain full for them. Gents or male family member would be too much happly due to this permission as they will take rest at home and ask to his ladies/women go out for visiting to / purchasing from market / other works etc.
Other thing there are too much rush of vehicles merely for permission to drive the vehicle only male. If the permission is being given to women this could be too much vechiles on the road like as Dubai or other Eurpian countries. That will increase the ration of accident than earler. However the ration of accident is greater than other countries in KSA

It will be decided by the KSA Govt. that this issue would be solved by issueing them licences or not....

Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said " There will come a time when a women will travel from Sham to Arabia to do Hajj/Umrah alone and will not fear being harmed". She will travel alone unharmed. So there is no point of banning womens from driving.

there is no quote in the koran prohibiting women to drive. why not giving them a little freedom? accident happen because they are not properly regulated by the gov't. time to move a little on the rights of a women.. FIGHT for it!!!

There are many things not in the Quran for present day life, however, Islamic scholars, considered as the "inheritors of the Prophet", decide on issues effecting the present, such as organ donation. We do not use this argument, "it is not found in the Quran" and there is a mechanism to decide such issues.

I believe that boggs read a little about Quran, or never or maybe unbeliever. His sense is not of good faith, therefore do not influence what you do not know, orchestrating without knowledge of what is right or wrong in the world of muslims.
