Russia says Syrians must decide Assad's fate

Russia on Thursday said the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be decided through a national dialogue, rejecting any solution imposed from abroad to end the violence in the country.

Assad's future should be decided by a "Syrian dialogue by the Syrian people themselves," Lavrov said, adding Russia could not support solutions for Syria "dictated from abroad" while backing the idea of a "transitional period" which would be discussed in talks in Geneva at the weekend.
