You can’t beat getting cozy with a romantic movie on Valentine’s Day. So, to help set the mood for romance, here are 10 of our favourite movies to cuddle up to.
The Notebook
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling star in this romantic weepy that reflects on the lives of two young lovers, Allie and Noah, in a story read from a notebook by an elderly man to an elderly woman he visits in a nursing home. Featuring the classic rich girl/poor boy storyline, a romance torn apart by war, and the kind of eternal love that everyone dreams of, this movie is guaranteed to touch even the hardest of hearts.
Valentine’s Day
A perfect choice for Valentine’s Day, this movie combines snippets of one Valentine’s Day in LA from all kinds of angles on love – soppy school kids, heartbroken exes and long-time lovers. This rom-com will open your eyes to love’s strange ways and hopefully make you appreciate the love you have in your own lives. Full of ups and downs and strange twists (don’t worry, we won’t spoil it for you) this one will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. A pick and mix of love and lust, Valentine’s Day in this movie has all of the mishaps and miracles of a lifetime of love.
Serendipity
An oldie but a goody, starring Kate Beckinsale and the dashing John Cusack, this movie highlights the uncanny coincidence of being in the right place at the right time and how life is full of funny coincidences. Definitely not one for the cynics out there, as it plays on the love at first sight notion, but somehow its cheesiness becomes lovable and watching a romance develop on screen is always a must in rom-coms.
Ghost
A romantic supernatural thriller in which banker Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is murdered but then returns as a ghost to protect his grief-stricken girlfriend Molly (Demi Moore) and solve his own murder. This movie is a real tear-jerker, and everyone will probably have already seen the potter’s wheel scene which helped make the Righteous Brothers’ ‘Unchained Melody’ a hit again. There are a few good laughs along the way, too – notably from Goldberg, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her humorous performance.
When Harry Met Sally
This is unquestionably one of the best-loved romantic comedies of all time, and is also a funny commentary on friendships, courtship, and other hardships. The movie’s story has been copied in various ways many a time, but has never been bettered. And who can forget Ryan’s fake orgasm scene? ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ indeed.
The Time Traveller's Wife
Starring romantic movie veteran Rachel McAdams, this is an unconventional story that follows the unusual love affair of Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana); a man born with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily time travel. Despite being confusing to follow at times, the movie has an engaging and moving plot that depicts Henry and Clare’s attempt to make love work in spite of the major obstacle stood in their way.
Love Actually
The iconic British rom-com is a must-have in any movie collection. The cast is the cream of the crop and there is definitely somebody and something for everyone in this hilarious yet heartfelt movie. A representation of different perspectives of love, this movie will open your eyes while making them crease with laughter at the same time. With favorites Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley and Emma Thompson there’s nothing you can’t love about this rom-com.
Once
A modern-day musical set in the streets of Dublin, Once is a heart-warming romantic indie movie that tells the story of a street performer (Glen Hansard) and an immigrant (Marketa Irglova) as they try to make sense of their lives and loves through the power of music. Containing a rousing soundtrack from the stars’ very own group, The Swell Season, Once is an uplifting tale of second chances and free spirits. With a charm all of its own, and an unexpected ending, Once is certainly a movie that will raise your spirits and get you in the mood for romance...
Pretty Woman
There can’t be many occasions when a movie in which a hooker meets a millionaire who sweeps her off her feet holds such great appeal to women – but undoubtedly this does! Julia Roberts, as the down-on-her-luck girl, and Richard Gere, as the corporate mogul, star in this improbable love affair which is a kind of My Fair Lady meets Cinderella story. The movie works well and is a timeless romantic comedy for which Roberts was rightly nominated for an Academy Award.
Romeo and Juliet (1996)
A classic tale of love and tragedy, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is an updated version of Shakespeare’s famous play (which still retains its original dialogue) featuring “star-crossed” lovers Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) who fall in love in spite of their families' hatred for each other. As the lovers struggle to be together, Juliet takes desperate measures to resist her family’s wishes, with tragic consequences. This is an energetic and fast-paced production of the ultimate love story, perfect for Valentine’s Day.
