Vettel dominates Singapore practice

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Formula One world champion Sebastian

Vettel shrugged off the disappointment of failing to finish in

Monza by dominating both free practice sessions for the

Singapore Grand Prix on Friday. An alternator problem ended his

Italian Grand Prix challenge two weeks ago but the German, who

won this race last season, had no such problems around the

streets of Singapore and offered evidence that he can reignite

his title challenge this weekend.

Paralympics: Spanish swimmer will not stop at 22 medals

MADRID (Reuters) - Perched proudly in her wheelchair next

to the communal pool at her apartment block in Zaragoza, a

beaming Teresa Perales can barely lift the 22 Paralympic

swimming medals hanging around her neck and covering almost the

entire upper part of her body. A mother and a former local

politician as well as one of a handful of Paralympians with

more than 20 medals, the 36-year-old Spaniard added a gold,

three silvers and two bronzes in London to her combined haul of

16 at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Games, putting her level

with the athlete many consider the greatest Olympian, American

swimmer Michael Phelps.

Soccer: Ferguson asks United fans to avoid personal hatred

LONDON (Reuters) - Manager Alex Ferguson has written to

Manchester United fans attending Sunday's match against

Liverpool, urging them not to let the rivalry between the clubs

turn into "personal hatred". The Premier League match is the

first between the two fierce rivals since the publication last

week of an independent report into the Hillsborough stadium

disaster which exonerated Liverpool fans of any blame in the

1989 tragedy that claimed 96 lives.

Tiger lands first blow in East Lake "duel" with Rory

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Tiger Woods delivered the best possible

response to suggestions earlier this week that he is

intimidated by Rory McIlroy as he outscored the world number

one by three shots in the Tour Championship first round on

Thursday. Playing with the mop-haired Northern Irishman in the

final pairing in front of huge galleries at East Lake Golf

Club, Woods birdied two of the last four holes for a

four-under-par 66 to burst into a share of the lead.
